Lupita Nyong’sMakeup On New York Magazine Cover Misses The Mark By A Longshot

Lupita Nyong is New York Magazine‘s Spring
Fashion issue cover girl , which makes sense given the
place Nyong’o's made for herself on every best dressed
list in the last six months. The clothing is expectedly
gorgeous, and more than that, the photos are visually
interesting beyond being beautiful. I can barely take
my eyes off of her perfect biceps. However, the
impossible has happened: I am displeased by a beauty
choice concerning Nyong’o. Much of the makeup in the
shoot seems oddly off, as if none of the choices were
intentional or even picked with Nyong’o in mind.
I appreciate what NY Mag was trying to do with a bold
styling risk, but it didn’t measure up to the risks
Nyong’o takes on the red carpet or at press events by a
long shot. This is the woman who looked fantastic in a
cape, made a purple jumpsuit seem like obvious casual
wear, and rocked a faux widow’s peak without batting
an eye. Nyong’o's risks have all been calculated to
great effect, while this frosted confection coupled with
overeager airbrushing feels unintentional and
haphazard.
The pink eye shadow is a pretty bold choice, and I
think it works in some of the photos better than
others. It’s a testament to Nyong’o radiant skin that she
can wear pink eye shadow without looking like she’s
being treated for some sort of infection, it’s
shocking and unconventional, but at worst, it fights her
skin tone and detracts from her eyes.
I think the makeup truly fails with the lipstick. The
frosted pale pink simply doesn’t do anything for
Nyong’o's lips, which are impossibly beautiful on any
other day. In this picture, for instance, I feel like skin
is washed out and her lips are downplayed by the
silvery pink that’s caked on top, and ruins an
otherwise stunning photo.
